How To Create a Vivid Vision For Your Business

October 11th, 2016 | 8 comments

As business owners (or aspiring business owners), we all have goals, right? That’s a given.

I find I go through stages in my life where my goals are clear and other times when I’m pretty confused about what exactly I want. In truth, after the all-encompassing identity change of becoming a mother, I’m finding it hard to decide on goals. Specifically, goals that are in the highest good for all. It’s a new process, including a tiny human in my life.

I’m committed to creating intentions in my life where no one is left behind: my inner child, my daughter, my husband, my clients, the world. I mean it. And that makes the process of defining my goals a very wholesome process.

Have you ever sat down and created a Vivid Vision™ for yourself? I’ve found it’s the first step to making your biggest goals actually happen!

It’s been a game-changing exercise for my Mentor Masterclass students as they go through my premium life coaching training course and build the foundations for their businesses and their lives.

Today I’d like to give you a FREE front-row seat inside Mentor Masterclass as I walk you through this powerful exercise inspired by Cameron Herold’s book Double Double.

So grab a pen and let’s do this! Let’s create your Vivid Vision.

What’s a Vivid Vision, exactly? It’s a written document that describes in clear detail what your business will look and feel like in three years. I do this for both my business and my personal life. I even create one with my husband (and in the future when Violet is old enough I’ll probably add her to this ritual as well.)

How To Create a Vivid Vision For Your Business

The first step in creating a Vivid Vision: start thinking about these key questions.

When you peer into the future, what do you see?

What do you want to be there?

What materializes in front of you as the epitome of success?

Again, right now don’t worry about how you’re going to build it. Just focus on describing what you see over the next three years.

Next, sharpen your pencil or grab your pen for this powerful exercise.

Imagine you’re filming every aspect of your business: your team, clients, affiliate relationships, and so on.

Play this movie in your mind and ask yourself: what do the big picture and the details look like three years out?

To answer these Vivid Vision questions, you’ll need to free your mind from the day-to-day worries of running your business and allow yourself the freedom and concentration to visualize the future, just as Olympic athletes visualize their performances.

Here are a few steps to get you started:

  • You may be writing just three or four pages, but they’re the most important three or four pages you’ll ever write. So get out of your office, walk away from the dining room table, or wherever you usually work. You’ll clear your mind and not get dragged back into the details of running your business.

  • Forget the question of “how?” Simply let your mind wander.

  • Turn off your computer. Don’t use your laptop to start drafting the Vivid Vision for your company. Instead, use a pen/pencil and paper—maybe even go for unlined paper. There’s magic in writing it all out by hand! It will help you access your creativity faster than you thought possible.

  • Here’s a great rule that might surprise you: if what you think about during one of these writing sessions seems bizarre or a little crazy, it’s definitely something you should include in your Vivid Vision.

Use This Vivid Vision Checklist

Now pretend you traveled in a time machine into the future. The date is December 31, three years from now. You’re walking around your company’s offices with a clipboard in hand.

  • What do you see?

  • What do you hear?

  • What are clients saying?

  • What does the media write about you?

  • What kind of comments are your employees making at the water cooler?

  • What is the buzz about you in your community?

  • What is your marketing like? Are you marketing your goods/ services globally now? Are you launching new online and TV ads?

  • How is the company running day to day? Is it organized and running like a clock?

  • What kind of stuff do you do every day? Are you focused on strategy, team building, customer relationships, etc.?

  • What do the company’s financials reveal?

  • How are you funded now?

  • How are your core values being realized among your team? This means your team culture, staff, marketing, sales, work-life balance, etc.

Once you write out all the ideas on your head, you’ll be surprised to learn how easy it is write a three-page description of your thoughts.

Never forget what true success looks like to you, sister. When you’re creating your own business, why not build your dreams right into it?

Now I’d love to hear from you in the comments: what came up for you as you completed this exercise, or even just thought it through?

And, I get it. Sometimes you’re just feeling so stuck it’s impossible to create a visual of your future. This is when it can be really powerful to open up your heart and direct your focus on receiving the support of a coach. Maybe it’s time we work together, in person and one-on-one. You can fill out an application now to join me for a VIP- Intent to Live session and start off this year with clarity and focus.

  1. I LOVED using the vivid vision tool! It really helped feel into the future of my business. I recommend it to everyone who isn’t crystal clear on their vision they hold for their future in business.

  2. I’m actually amazed about how vivid some parts of my vision were when I did this exercise. I could literally SEE what my future work/play space looked like. I could smell the flowers blooming outside my office window and hear the laughter of the mamas and babies I serve. I saw the color scheme and the way my desk and computer were set up. I fee like it’s a real place even though it looks nothing like my current circumstances. Thanks for the invitation! x.

  3. I love doing this assignment. It’s so much fun to see, hear, and smell a beautiful future filled with all my heart’s desires.
