How to Rehearse Like a PRO for Your Next Life Coaching Event

June 17th, 2015 | 3 comments

Are you planning for a big speech or live workshop? That’s awesome, but I bet you’re also feeling a little nervous too.

Are you wondering…

Should you make cue cards, or memorize everything?
Should you look it over once or twice, and just trust you’ll know what to do?
Should you be practicing every day?
How do you even begin to rehearse in a way that will set you up for success?

Don’t worry, love. Watch today’s episode, and you’ll be a total pro!

I’m dishing out the secrets to successfully rehearse your materials and rock the house when the time comes.

You ready? Let’s get into it.

Before we get into my secrets, I don’t care what anyone says:

There is no such thing as over-rehearsing.

Buuuut, you also don’t want to rehearse your brains out just days before your event either. The key is space. Lots of delicious, spacious time.

So, how much space exactly? Watch today’s episode for all the details.

In my experience, if you start planning and rehearsing 3 weeks ahead of time, you’ll feel completely comfortable and confident on your big day.

But, don’t memorize your material completely! Otherwise, you’ll get stiff and struggle to connect with your material.

Instead, you want to know the important points and journey of your material inside and out. It’s more beneficial to memorize a bulleted mind map, outlining the focus and journey, but not writing out your material word for word.

Whatever you do, DON’T try to just wing it, because your audience will pick up on that and this will create mistrust. You’re basically sending a big signal to your audience that says: “I don’t value your time at all.”

When you rehearse, you can be more powerfully present on stage. So, the point here is to rehearse more than you think you should.

Here are my 3 secrets to a successful rehearsal:

Secret #1

Get honest feedback from someone after having them listen to your speech and take notes. Ask them to help you make sure your points are clear, and are resonating with your audience.

Print out your speech for an expert to jot down what you say well, what you forgot to mention, what to keep for sure, and what parts are distracting or confusing. Your mom, hubby, or best friend could be just as helpful if you don’t know anyone who is an expert at taking the stage.

Secret #2

Make a short version. You may end up having less time than you expected, or the time schedule may get switched up last minute. So it’s best to have two versions of your speech or workshop ready, and rehearse both the long and the short options.

Secret #3

Practice your material by recording it in audio or video. Pretend you are in front of an audience, time it and address the camera as you would the audience. You can do the same thing by just recording your voice.

Then you’ll want to listen or watch the replay back and take notes on:

The pace of your speaking
How natural and relaxed you look and sound
Does it sound like you mean what you say?
Do you fumble for words a lot?
Do you have any nervous words, like “Umm…” or “Uh…”?
How’s your stage presence?
Are you making eye contact?
How are your facial expressions
What gestures are you making?
Do you appear to have confidence and ease of movement
