How to Use Hootsuite For Social Media Automation: 4 Tips To Help You Stay Authentic

January 28th, 2015 | 15 comments

For today’s Wake Up Wednesday, Mariska Anderson asked:

“What do you think about using applications like Hootsuite as related to authenticity?

(Fabulous question, Mariska! Let’s dive in.)

Time and time again, my clients and colleagues ask me: “What do you think is the most important element to a great coaching business and marketing strategy?

And you know what I tell ‘em?

It’s not just a killer voice, a strong message, and a knack for finding your niche (though those are definitely critical pieces of the puzzle!)

It’s consistency.

Consistently providing valuable content to your ideal client. Consistently bringing solutions to their problems. Consistently showing up, and being present and around.

However, there’s just one teensy little problem with consistently giving your people what they need: it means pouring tons of time into your social media accounts.

And, if you’re spending hours on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram every day, chances are, you’re avoiding other important areas of your business (or you’re hiding behind a computer screen and not making real connections or actually coaching!)

The solution? Automation. But sometimes, automated posts can sound a little… robotic.

The reality is, cranking out automated inspirational quotes every day isn’t going to connect you with your tribe. Why? Because that gets old, and says absolutely 0 about you.

A big shift happened for me when I stopped thinking of my Hootsuite automated posts as “filler,” and decided to use them to create consistency. (And, to keep things fresh, I also pop in when I’m having a real inspiration, or a vulnerable share that could serve my audience or the greater good in some way.)

So, how do you do that? How do you make your content personal, on-brand, and connection-driven, while still being easy to automate – so you can spend more time doing what you love?

Here are a few of my favorite ways to keep your social media real and consistent for your people – even when you automate posts.

Tip #1: Start a Creative Intention Ritual

I’ve designed a once-a-month ritual around creating content. I spend 2 hours, light a candle, and drop into the desires, fears, heart and mind of my tribe. Then, from what i uncover from that quiet meditation. I craft my posts.

Automation has the potential to be a marketer’s best friend. It’s the easiest, most streamlined way to keep our connection to our people. However, the content MUST be relevant to your ideal audience – which is where this little ritual comes in!

Tip #2: Say NO to Spammy Automation!

One alternative to posting famous quotes to fill up your feed? Graphics, baby. A picture speaks a thousand words!

So, pick a pretty photo you love, and use your brand colors and voice to make it your own – with your own words, or the words of someone who inspires you deeply. Those posts go viral like wildfire!

Just remember: as long as you’re being YOU, with intent, you can automate some connection with your tribe and still remain authentic

Tip #3: Daily Genuine Interactions

While you should absolutely automate your posts as often as possible, make sure you carve out 15 minutes a day of live interaction to go in, and ‘like’ or respond to the way people are reacting to your automated content.
This shows your tribe you’re REALLY there for them, reading their questions and comments, and invested deeply in their well being.

Tip #4: Clear Purpose & Consistency

Feel like you’re confused around your social media strategy? This handy tip may be just the thing you’ve been looking for.

Think of each of your social media platforms as having its own reason to exist in your business.

For example:

  • Twitter- could be about humor and attention
  • FB personal or biz- vulnerable shares and valuable content
  • Instagram- lifestyle tips and branding

By giving yourself clear parameters around social media, you will find it easier to pick and choose content to create and automate for your tribe. {Click to Tweet}

Now, it’s YOUR turn to give & receive!

I want to know: who are your favorite people to follow on social media?

Do they have any automation?

Are they consistent?

  1. Great advice Jey! Thanks for breaking it down for us in a few easy steps – I’ve always gone back and forth with using Hootsuite for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Your solution feels much more natural.

  2. Thanks coach Jey! All this month I had been wondering the best and Monday effective way to organize my social media posts. I found this really so incredibly valuable.
I will be utilizing your 2 hours at the beginning of the month plan and prepare my posts.

    You are the BEST

  3. Thank you for sharing these invaluable tips. Social media is a mystery to me and I just recently (this weekend) started to seek out advice on how to best utilize this medium without being cheesy or overwhelming. Your tips are relevant to those of us who want true connection and provide valuable content to the people we serve. Your wisdom is much appreciated.

  4. Hey Jey! I just started using Buffer this week to help me with my SM automation and still getting the hang of it so I found this video timely and super helpful! I love the idea of the monthly ritual to truly feel into what I want to share with my tribe. I also want to apply setting a distinct purpose behind each of my SM platforms. And … find a way to jazz up my scheduled content with my voice and brand. Lots of great stuff to start applying!

    • Hey Amanda!

So happy this topic came right on time love! I find it’s really helpful to set a date. Have you set one yet? Would you like to declare it here and share a link to your social media platforms so we can all follow along?

  5. Thank you so much for this! Really helpful, and something I really struggle with as the founder of my own coaching business for new moms and newlyweds. I don’t have enough time to do it all! I was looking in my inbox for the template you were going to share for subscribers of your social media scheduling, and I couldn’t find it. Could you please point me in the right direction? I need that! And I get your emails, but sometimes am just a bit behind on opening everything! Thank you again, Jey! xo

    • Hey Gervase,

It was an actually an audio you will find attached to the email where we share this blog. Thank you for being a part of my tribe and I know how important it is to clear our email sister. It has the same subject line: How to Use Hootsuite For Social Media Automation: 4 Tips To Help You Stay Authentic. Hope that helps you to find the newsletter with your free gift! 🙂

  6. Hey Coach Jey! I was introduced to your work about a month ago by a dear friend and mentor and I’m SO GLAD! I love what you’re doing for coaches and have found all of your content so far to be immensely valuable as I’m ramping up my business. Since I’m a recent subscriber, I wasn’t on your list when you sent out the audio file to accompany this post. Is there any way that I can still receive it? I would really benefit from having a structured content calendar and your monthly ritual idea makes it sound sooooooo much more enjoyable! Either way, thanks again for being a source of clarity and guidance! 🙂
