Use this NLP Technique to Master Confusion Every Time

March 11th, 2015 | 6 comments

Confusion is a part of our day-to-day lives. Like happiness, sadness, courage or doubt, it’s an essential element of the human experience.

But just because confusion happens sometimes, doesn’t mean you have to let it rule you. Or for that matter, your clients.

In fact, confusion can be an awesomely useful tool to help your clients make major, powerful shifts during sessions with complete ease and eventually, clarity!

This is where Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) comes in. NLP coaching views confusion as a mighty state of transition and a useful resource for coaches.

You client’s confusion is likely causing them to feel all over the place. I want to teach you how you can tame that energy and use it to the advantage of both you AND your client.

When you know how to harness this challenge in your client’s path, you can deliberately put your clients into a trance, so they become more receptive to your coaching, and you can go deeper together.

Confusion creates some kind of muddle or blur. But this is actually a useful tool for you!

Confusion distracts your client from their usual patterns, disrupts their thinking process, and leaves them open to new suggestions. This puts them in a space where they’re most susceptible to change.

These important facts make confusion an excellent place to inspire coaching and give your client a reboot from old patterns.

Here’s an example:

Let’s say you have a client who needs help managing her time to complete her book before the editing deadline.

She says: “Saturday is the ONLY time I have to write for 3 hours. There’s no other time.”

But… Saturday writing time isn’t happening.

This is a great opportunity to get your client out of being set in her ways and into confusion, so you can help her into a new pattern.

You’ll can do this by playing with the ambiguity of words and using questions and statements that include words that sound the same, but have different meanings. (Like using the words “write” and “right”.)

Now, it’s time to ask the right questions, in just the right way.

Ask your client:

“Do you write with your right hand? If you do, when do you think it would be the right time to write and the wrong time to write? We want to make sure to get you on the right track with your writing. Especially if you are right handed!”

Wait for the confused look on their face. They’re listening, but not quite sure what you’re saying.

“So listen, my suggestion is you set aside 30 minutes every morning before your family wakes up for writing, so you can complete this book by the editing deadline and get the 3 hours in no matter what!”

You’re introducing new behavior your client is ready to receive because of their state of confusion. It’s a beautiful thing!

Your client will be so open to your suggestion it will be nearly impossible for them to can your suggestion. It’s the perfect way to guide your client into making the right choice, without feeling like you’re giving them a direct order.

It’s a handy trick that works every time.
