What’s REALLY Holding You Back From Launching A Successful Life Coaching Business?

August 30th, 2016 | 4 comments
“I recently started my life coaching business and I’m working on becoming a good coach. But I feel a little stuck. What’s really holding me back from launching my life coaching business?”

I know so many of you have this question! Maybe you can’t quite put your finger on what’s standing in your way.

This has been on the mind of one of our sisters, Kelli Boyd, who was kind enough to come ask this question today. Kelli is a life coach who’s passionate about living a life free of fear. Kelli and I have an extra special connection because we both share a performance background! Kelli does a lot of voiceover work and I couldn’t help but geek out a little bit over her super professional mic setup.

And it turns out the answer to Kelli’s question is much deeper than you might think.

As life coaches we’re doing work that we love that aligns very closely with who we are, so there’s a misconception that it should be easy.

This profession requires you to wear so many hats, and you expose yourself so much by putting yourself out there in the world. You give your intimate heart for this work, and in the beginning stages of your life coaching business you don’t always get a lot in return.

You’re called to do your own inner work while also becoming a leader, a manager, a marketer, a technology expert, and so much more.

We’re passionate about our work and aligned with it, and at the same time it’s a lot of work to go through this process!

There are the four questions to ask yourself to help uncover what’s holding you back from launching your life coaching business. They’re based on the four themes I’ve seen time and again with coaches just starting out (and they’re the themes we cover inside my all-in life coaching program, Mentor Masterclass.)

  • Are you walking your talk? Are you taking enough space in your personal life to be clear about your inner belief system, your fears, and your thoughts about yourself and the world? It gets messy! (I go into a lot more detail on this one at the 4:57 mark in the video.)

  • Are you practicing high-level coaching techniques in a safe space? Have you had enough practice or are you leaning on life experience? (I explain exactly what I mean at the 5:53 point in the video.)

  • Are you comfortable prospecting? Are your techniques up-to-date? Make sure it feels aligned with your strengths and comfort zone. (Jump to the 6:23 point in the video to learn more.)

  • Are you up-to-date on how to market your coaching business? You need to be in-the-know about the latest online marketing techniques! Do you feel comfortable leveraging the huge reach of the online world to call in your dream clients? (7:30)

And one last thing: as ambitious and passionate women who want to go out there and change the world with our coaching businesses, we can find ourselves wearing our lone warrior mindset like a badge of honor. And that’s not good.

It’s so easy to slip into the mindset of, “I don’t need help! I can figure this out!” Because the truth is we are strong. We are smart and motivated. But those strengths can turn into our greatest weakness if we don’t reach out for help.

Here’s the truth: you’re NOT meant to do this by yourself. Ask yourself where you need support, and how can you receive it at the highest level.

Then, don’t be afraid to invest in yourself. It shows you’re passionate, it shows you believe in yourself, and it’s how you’ll get the most powerful results.

  1. Thank you for this Jey and Kelli! It was so great to see your face on Wake Up Wednesday Kelli 🙂 I couldn’t agree more that becoming a life coach is full of so many wonderful things and combines so many different skills. It has helped me to see where my blocks are, feeling like I need to reach that point of perfection before I can launch my business… as it turns out I’m never going to reach that point of perfection so that definitely needs to be the first excuse I throw out the window! The only main thing that reasonates with me is leaning into #mastermentorclass more and really be willing to receive support I need, I mean really, getting more honest and more open about where I am at. I also never thought about getting my personal life together as part of my coaching business but I see now just how important it is and just how many changes I have gone through in just 3 months of #mentormasterclass – I see this as uplevelling big time and want to continue to do so. Ready to lean in and receive more support and utilize the tools that are right in front of my face. Thanks again ladies! xo

  2. This really spoke to me. Especially the part about being a lone warrior and asking for support within our current support system. It’s one of those things that seems so obvious, but this video was really an opportunity for me to look at where I need to ask for more support. Thanks!!!
