What does a life coach do?

(I will tell you exactly what a life coach does voice to voice when you dive into the episode our conversation about what coaches do is at the 7:09 point in the podcast episode!)

What does a coach offer in the world?

What does she actually do when she’s coaching clients?

And what does a daily schedule look like when someone works from home and runs her own business — and is in charge of her own success?

A life coach really is an entrepreneur, innovating a life strategy and a business that works for them.  While every coach will be unique in how they run their business and who they coach what a life coach does is the same for all coaches.

With the right training, you should be taught never to copy someone else’s business model or exact way of coaching— there’s a unique business model and style that works for you. This is exactly what I teach the women in my all-in life coach training program, Mentor Masterclass.

Every coach has a unique set of skills and talents they should pull in to add the basic foundation of what all coaches do, in order to stand out and build a successful business.  In order to know what a life coach does, you need to go through a process of self-discovery while you learn mastery level coaching techniques. This will help you discern which techniques you love using most, are gifted at integrating into sessions and that get your clients lasting results.

On a basic level, what do life coaches do?

Life coaches work with their clients to help them achieve goals. They help them overcome things that are keeping them stuck, help them move past playing small, and address problems and challenges that are standing in the way of getting what they really want. Life coaches help people make life-changing shifts and adjustments in their life patterns, habits, behavior, and belief systems… to live a better life and achieve their goals.

Well-trained life coaches don’t give advice, but instead serve as a partner along the way, bringing a person through to a potential that already exists inside of them. Coaching is based on the skills of listening, asking powerful questions, creating a safe space with clients, being a clear space for accessing their potential and holding clients accountable to taking action. Coaching is not about your life experience, expertise or opinions. It’s a trained skill that involves understanding NLP (neuro linguisting programming), mind, body and soul connection in order to access momentum, clarity and an unbreakable drive. I teach my clients how to experience what a life coach does by first going through a week of self discovery for themselves.

Life coaching might be your calling if you have the gift of looking at and seeing the highest good and the greatest potential for people, and if you’re passionate about how the mind, soul, body, and spirit work together. Or, if you’re passionate about techniques for healing and getting clear and taking action, then you’re probably born to be a life coach.  If you’re friends always come to you for advice because they feel you know them best, you probably already know exactly what a life coach does on a small scale and you’ve probably been practicing for YEARS!

A life coach helps people define themselves and create the life they’ve been envisioning. They provide focus, encouragement, and direction. They lovingly call their clients out, and do what it takes to get them up off their asses and into action!

(I explore this more at the 9:55 point in the podcast episode.)

Life coaching is based on the principle that the client has the inner resources to decide and to go after what their goals are… and that everything is based on being in the present moment, knowing what you want to achieve in your life, and what’s preventing you from getting it.  What a life coach does is gives you the time and space to explore your intrinsic and extrinsic world and to create clear action steps to live the life you really want.

Highly skilled coaches are trained to hold a space that goes beyond just asking questions, but also allows you to go through an identity transformation, becoming who you need to be, with a different set of patterns and beliefs needed to live a better life.

Some coaches are even trained in things like family constellation healing and trauma as a means for moving supporting you in moving through blocks that run deep.

How is Life Coaching Different From Therapy

Life coaching is different from therapy, in that there’s no nationally recognized certification for becoming a coach. Coaches can combine multiple forms of training, their unique personality and their own branding into their business model and how they work with clients. Therapy is about digging up, reliving, and redefining the past. Coaching, by contrast, is forward driven, and coaches work with all types of people with different drives. A coach may choose a niche market of working with people who are full of direction and want to really up-level their lives. Or a coach may work with people who are feeling challenged and need a coach to help them get out of feeling stuck in the mud or rock bottom of life.

In coaching you get to choose who you work with, what kind of packages you offer, your own pricing and your own schedule. You have complete freedom to run your sessions in a unique way. This is what makes starting a career as a life coach so exciting. It’s also why you need mastery level training in order to get clear, ground your vision and your unique coaching model.  After seven years training women to become successful life coaches in my signature life coach training program Mentor Masterclass, I’ve discovered the freedom is sometimes what leaves aspiring and established coaches feeling stuck and uncertain of how to build a life coaching business.  We are not used to being given creative freedom in our careers. A lot of my work involves helping my coaching clients, aspiring and established coaches, to become mastery level trained coaches and to create their signature coaching methods through my online and in person life coach training program.

Women in my life coach training program have the opportunity and get the training to start making money as a coach within their first month of the program.  I will tell you that women who walk their talk and are willing to do the deep inner healing, first in their own life, have greater success building a magnetizing coaching brand.  If you love to do self improvement and are open to processing things in your life with a deeper perspective and commitment to growth, you will do well as a life coach.

How do life coaches meet with paying clients?

Many coaches meet with their clients over the telephone. This is the biggest way and it’s one of the most amazing parts about becoming a coach! A lot of people pursue life coaching as a career when they want location, time and financial freedom, meaning there’s no commute to work. You can be anywhere in the world and work with someone anywhere in the world at any time of day, all because most coaching happens over the phone.

A typical session with a client can be anywhere from 45-90 minutes.

(I share more about this at the 14:23 mark in the episode, so skip to that point if you want to hear me walk through it all.)

If you’re wondering how much it costs to start a coaching business, you’ll love this:  There’s very little upfront investment to start a coaching business.  Invest in a high-level life coach training that is aligned with your lifestyle, get a phone line and a laptop and you are ready to go!

You don’t need to pay office rent and you don’t need equipment, because it’s not a brick and mortar business. You can do it all from home, saving you and your clients time and money on travel.

If you prefer, you can absolutely have a meeting place somewhere. You might rent a space or clients can come into your home, where you might have a designated office. So in some cases there are coaches who like to meet in person with their clients.  The best part is, your home or apartment rent becomes a business write off!

You can also meet on Skype or a common conference line, using software like Zoom. Some life coaches like to run sessions over video, so you can see your client’s face and still be physically interacting, which is beneficial because there are some deeper coaching techniques that allow you to dive into physical movement as a resource for discerning what conversation models and techniques to use with your coaching clients.

And of course, you can have any combination of these meeting methods, too.

When I’m working one-on-one with clients, I like to work with them just over the phone because I move around the room a lot. I dance to move energy, take a lot of notes, and I get to dive deeper just by working on the phone when I’m not concerned about my clients reaction to my physicality.  Some days I wear yoga pants (or no pants!) and some days I get dressed up like a goddess. My clients never need to know!

When I lead my group coaching calls, they’re all on Zoom conferencing over video so I can see all the women I work with around the world and they can see and interact with each other in sisterhood.  Sisterhood and connecting women with like-minded and powerful women is a huge part of my unique business model and the signature coaching method I use inside my all in life coach training program for women, Mentor Masterclass.

Finally, I love to lead in-person retreats where I get to be in-person with my clients in beautiful places around the world.

So what do life coaches do when it comes to deciding how they work with clients?

I personally do a little bit of all three face-to-face coaching, virtual coaching over the telephone, video conferencing, and in-person connection through luxury retreats with my paying clients.

Other ways coaches work with client are through written coaching in a blog, book or to a private email list.  Some coaches create online products that can be sold evergreen, online. Evergreen means it does not require being live or your continued time investment, once it is created you can sell it while you sleep.  Some of the celebrity mentors that teach inside my signature life coach training program Mentor Masterclass have even created phone apps and membership sites. I have a panel of successful women coaches support my students so they learn first hand that there are many different ways to build your business and your profit as a coach.  The key is finding the creative output that makes most sense to you, your gifts, talents and how you like to work.

What Does A day in The Life of Running a Life Coaching Business Look Like?

I’ll take you through the daily schedule of Emily, a graduate of my signature life coach training program, Mentor Masterclass. She also joined another of my programs, The Sisterhood Mastermind.

8:00 AM. Emily wakes and starts her day.

She does a morning ritual, which is all about taking care of herself first. She has a clear focus and intention for her day, knows how she’s going to be present during that day, and she also sets a tone for gratitude for the life that she’s created.

You’ll feel it, too — it’s a pretty awesome life, full of the freedom to create your own hours and skip that 40-hour workweek if you want. In fact, I work with women to create shorter workweeks that are more impactful, so your whole life isn’t just about work and running your coaching business.

I currently run a multi 6-figure coaching business myself and work a total of 18 hours a week on my business.

Next, Emily moves into her client work

She has two new potential clients that learned about her from a podcast she was featured on as a speaker. Emily discovered this form of prospecting and marketing works best for her based off the training she received working with me in Mentor Masterclass. Together we created a business model and plan that honors her strengths. She starts the day by emailing them after her morning ritual to schedule a free discovery session, where she’ll offer them the opportunity to experience what coaching is like with her and then tell them about her paid offerings and options for working together.  Emily will use the strategy session outline and unique coaching method she created while training to become a life coach and receiving her life coaching certification from Mentor Masterclass.

9:00 AM. Emily goes to yoga.

She then showers and has breakfast with a fellow coach she met in the intimate Mentor Masterclass sisterhood. They’re going to lead a retreat together in the fall and they’re meeting to look at potential venues as they connect and have breakfast.

(I talk about this at the 22:08 point in the episode)

11:00 AM. Emily begins her three client appointments.

She’s scheduled each session back to back. Each hour long appointment is done over the phone or video, and she allows a 30-minute break between each session to recap and make closing notes. She also prepares for the next session with the upcoming client.

Emily also creates an Instagram story, she’s posting about the results she’s getting for her clients. By doing this, she’s incorporating authentic marketing into her day and giving prospective clients a peek into her process (another part of her unique business model). She also posts on Facebook and Snapchat, making sure to comment on other people’s posts and responding to her own social media comments.  Emily knows who her ideal clients are after creating an “Ideal Client Avatar” during her Mentor Masterclass training. Because she learned over 375 coaching techniques and practiced using them inside the program she was able to see who she best serves, loves coaching and what real results she gets them. Having an ideal client avatar means she can focus her marketing efforts and is certain she will love the experience of working with the clients she is strategically attracting.

4:30 PM. Emily has a free 30-minute discovery call.

A potential client she met at yoga last week has signed up for a discovery call, which is a free session that will help her to experience what it is like working with Emily.  The woman decides to sign up with Emily as an official paid coaching client because Emily shared what coaching packages she has and what working with her is like.

Emily’s new client has signed up for her package, six sessions hour long sessions to be completed over a 3-month period, and she has given her the option to either pay in full, or to create a payment plan.

Emily set up all of her back end legal contracts, business structures and online payment/scheduling systems during her training with me in Mentor Masterclass (with the help of our celebrity mentors who specialize in each of these areas of business).  I also shared with her resources for hiring low cost team members and a system for hiring. She is all set to sign on this new client!

Emily emails her virtual assistant (who is someone that supports her in her business for $15 an hour) and asks her to contact her new client, send out her new client contract, enrollment assessment and the link to confirm dates for their upcoming life coaching sessions.

5:30 PM Emily meditates.

She mentally recaps the day and reviews her intention and plans for tomorrow.

7:00 PM Emily attends a new local sister circle gathering for women entrepreneurs.

Afterward, she makes a list of people to follow up with the next day, who are either potential clients, potential collaborators, or who are just supportive sisters in her work that she can stay connected to, and maybe even co-work with in the future since she works from home.

Do you need training to become a life coach?

If you want to become a highly skilled, master-level coach, you’ll need training that allows you to deepen into all the layers of coaching. There’s no set academic program for life coaches, but you want to be professionally trained in communication, counseling, goal-setting, developing the client-coach relationship, and teaching the techniques of the mind, soul, body and spirit.

You aren’t going to be confident enough to hold space and call in paying clients if you don’t feel confident about your own skills and knowledge in learning how to coach and lead a coaching client session. The best, fastest and surefire way to get legitimate training is to enroll in a life coach training school that uniquely satisfies your lifestyle. I’ll share with you how the training works for my signature life coach training program, and what kind of training I believe you need in order to be successful and how to make 6-figures or more, your first year becoming a coach.

The best life coach training schools will teach you to walk your talk

First of all, you need to walk your talk to make it through the first stage of learning anything. You don’t know what you don’t know about coaching and working with clients yet. When choosing a life coach training program you want to know that you are going to get intimate coaching and personal support building your business.

Getting thrown in a training program that has a basic model and doesn’t include mentor support is going to prove to be very challenging in meeting your unique needs. Going through this stage of walking your talk, where you take high-level, mastery level coaching techniques and learn them in a container where you have a coach and a trainer and mentor, help you learn exactly where you have your own blocks — and how life coaching techniques take you through a self-discovery and life-changing process.

(Want to hear me chat about this now? Skip to the 27:13 point in the episode.)

As a result, your life is going to change. You’re going to become more confident. You’ll recognize that you can’t help others when you’re coming from a place of depletion.   This is what we focus on in week one of every month in my signature life coach training program for women, Mentor Masterclass. I cap the number of women in this program to 46, to ensure every student is getting personal attention and mentorship from me, the founder and creator of the program.  This is why my students graduate making great money as a coach and why many women come to me after spending thousands of dollars and coach training programs that did not teach them what life coaches do and how to make money as a life coach.

Week 1: Unconscious Incompetence

In week one of every month in Mentor Masterclass, I use the theme of Reflect and Restore as I take my students through walking their talk. They go through this first stage of what’s called unconscious incompetence to recognize what they need to know to become a powerful coach as they use the coaching techniques they are learning in our monthly workbook on themselves first.   As a result their life transforms, they learn how the coaching techniques work and people in their lives are starting to feel captivated and interested in what they are doing and how they can help them to achieve these kinds of results too.

Week Two: Conscious Incompetence

In the second week of every month of the life coach training program, we get to the stage of learning called conscious incompetence. This is when my clients become aware of what you don’t know and you start actively learning it. I teach you how to be in a leadership role and start coaching as you step into the role of the coach.

You practice real mastery level life coaching techniques with a woman in the program, stepping into a coaching session and feeling into where your gifts and talents are as you gain experience, clarity and confidence.  You start to learn how to take the tools you are learning out of a workbook and into an actual coaching session so that you memorize them and they become a part of your tool belt.

Week Three: Discovering Your Unique Niche

At this point, I teach you how to discover your unique niche as a coach. And this is where all your training comes in.  You’ll practice your coaching live in class, receive my guidance and feedback to get clear on your gifts and talents as a coach, and receive supported feedback from the women training beside you.

(I explain this more at the 29:42 mark in the episode.)

If you don’t know what makes you special as a coach, you won’t stand out in the crowded coaching industry marketplace.

Mentor Masterclass Life Coach Training helps you learn where you’re uniquely gifted as a coach.

There are so many different types of coaches, including:

  • General life coaches

  • Life balance coaches

  • Health coaches

  • Executive coaches

  • Finance coaches

  • Relationship coaches

  • Intuitive coaches

  • Impact coaches

  • Accountability coaches

  • Business coaches.

  • Spiritual coaches

  • And so many more…

So really coaches work with all types of clients, from people who know what they want and are specifically looking for something, to those who want more general coaching.

In week three, I help you focus on taking what you’ve accomplished and walking your talk and stepping into the role of the coach. You learn how to get paying clients as you move through the intricacies of what it takes to market yourself as a coach and discovery who you are uniquely qualified to work with.

Week Four: Unconscious Competence

At this point in training with me, you unconsciously know what to do as a coach. This fourth week is about embracing your feminine power as a woman. You have a unique gift with your intuition, your body, and your cycle your period — each month syncs with the moon. It gives you different energy levels and ways of running your business.

We’ll dive into embracing your feminine power and reinvesting your energy into your coaching practice and building a model that really works for your life first, so you can embrace what it’s like to follow your calling.

What Training Do You Need To Become a Life Coach?

As I mentioned before there is no regulation for the training you need to become a life coach.  In Mentor Masterclass, I believe these 12 themes are the basic foundation for mastery level skills as a life coach.  In addition to NLP coaching techniques, in session skills, post session service skills, prospecting and marketing for business this is what I teach my students as part of their life coach certification:

  • Goal Setting & Health Coaching. Health challenges are different for each client. For some it may be nutrition, for some it may be exercise, and for others it may be specific physical illness. But regardless of each client’s individual needs, our job as coaches is to serve by helping them replace unhealthy patterns with healthy ones. This month we focus on teaching people how to create new patterns of self care so they can feel healthy, clean, energized, organized, unstuck, and motivated. You’ll learn and work with 37 tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help your clients take new actions, get new results, and shift their beliefs about their choices, their bodies, and their health.

  • Relationship Coaching. The longest relationship you’ll ever have is the relationship with yourself. Which means you’ll start this month as an opportunity to nurture a deeper understanding of your attitudes, actions, motivations, needs, and responses to life. Next you’ll look at intimate relationships, which can spark a range of emotions and experiences ranging from our greatest fears of loss, to our deepest feelings of connection and passions for existence – or anywhere in between You’ll learn 75 new tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help your clients in different phases of romantic relationship. From finding the perfect mate, to nurturing and strengthening an existing relationship, to letting go and healing after a breakup.

  • Inner and Outer Game Techniques. Managing our inner game means managing the thoughts and internal conversations we have with ourselves. When we manage our inner game we have the power to re-shape our language patterns, our beliefs, and even our physiology and physical sensations. Which means inner game techniques are another powerful set of tools we can use for ourselves and our clients. Managing our outer game is related. It means learning a set of tools and techniques that help you change the world around you – your “outside” world. Knowing how to have a positive impact on your outer world is empowering. Having the skills to help clients change their outer world is rewarding – for both them and you. You’ll learn and work with 61 tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help clients bring about life-changing results in their internal states and their external world.

  • Massive Action. An effective action coach gets people to take the actions necessary to achieve the results they want. When you’re great at action coaching, it means you’re nearly guaranteed of being an effective coach because you help your clients actually do something different to change their lives for the better. Action coaching is based in accountability – starting with yourself first, and then for your clients. You’ll learn and work with 23 tools, techniques, and conversation models that help you get your clients out of their old patterns and excuses, and into new, effective actions that lead to new, positive results.

  • Career Coaching & Coaching Entrepreneurs. You’ll learn how to coach clients who need help with professional challenges. From entrepreneurs and start-up business owners, to home-based business owners, to clients who are going through a career transition. Since one third of our entire adult lives will be spent at work, career coaching is an extremely important and in-demand specialty. You’ll learn and work with 51 tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help clients achieve their business goals, find solutions to struggles at work, and take the actions they need to find or create their dream job.

  • Identity & Accountability Coaching. Our identity is shaped by the roles we play in different situations. These roles often mirror our beliefs about ourselves. The good news is that we have the power – in every single moment – to play different roles, leading to different outcomes, which help us shape new beliefs. (Sound familiar?) You’ll learn and work with 15 new tools, techniques, and conversation models that give you the power to help your clients get honest about their beliefs so they can change the roles they’re playing, and ultimately get different results in their lives.

  • Create Your Own Coaching Model. The RSVP model is also an effective way to help your clients get the results they’re looking for. This month we go deeper into the background of this model, and how to apply it to your coaching practice in new ways. Since I created the RSVP model myself, I’ll also share the steps I used so you can follow them yourself if you feel called to create your own coaching method. You’ll learn and work with 16 tools, techniques, and conversation models that build on the RSVP process. That way, you’ll have the power to help your clients Restore their potential, Simplify their lives, Verify their beliefs, and step into their Power.

  • Metaphor & Archetype Coaching. Great coaches find effective ways to help clients let go of old patterns and habits that are no longer in their best interest. One of the most effective ways of doing this is to offer clients new frames of reference and models to substitute for the troublesome ones. We get a little “woo woo.” You’ll learn about working with goddesses and how to coach from a “soul mission” approach. (It’s OK if you want to skip this part too! This is a safe space to do what’s right for you.) You’ll learn and work with 13 new tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help your clients break free from their limiting patterns and create new patterns that fill them with hope, optimism, and excitement for the future.

  • The Keys to Motivation. At a core level, much of our behavior is motivated by the avoidance of pain or the seeking of pleasure – or a combination of the two. Which means that as coaches we’re most effective when we have tools that help our clients uncover their true motivations. You’ll learn and work with 12 tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to shine a light on what’s really driving your clients. Uncovering these deep motivations can be a powerful force that helps clients start making more conscious choices about their attitudes and behaviors, ultimately leading to better results in their lives.

  • Life Purpose. One of our deepest longings is to discover a purpose that brings meaning and fulfillment to our lives. There are three stages of life purpose, and this month you’ll learn what they are and how to coach clients along their unique path to finding and living their unique calling. You’ll learn and work with 15 tools, techniques, and conversation models that give you the power to help clients uncover their life purpose, craft a purpose statement they can use as daily guidance, and start to envision (and act on!) what it means to live their true calling.

  • Time Management and Productivity. There is a secret to ALL fast results. There are also distinct ways to understand time and its relationship to productivity. These tools allow us to create time freedom, financial abundance, and results in our lives that we’re proud to celebrate. As coaches we can help our clients create these things for themselves too. You’ll learn and work with 22 time and productivity tools that empower you to make better use of your time and get more of the satisfying results and outcomes you desire. Mastering these tools means you’ll have another set of skills to share with clients as well.

  • Power & Leadership Coaching. We all have access to the same sources of power in our lives, regardless of our individual circumstances. When we learn how to access these sources of power, we begin to live our lives with feminine authority. As coaches, once we understand and tap into these sources of power for ourselves, we’re able to help clients do the same. We’ll be embracing and working with 18 tools, techniques, and methods to help your clients re-shape their beliefs at the deepest levels so they can take new actions, leading to new results – living the fullest reflection of an empowered life.

On top of all this, there’s a prospecting workbook that walks you through everything about the new client intake process, how to have an application and assessment to bring your clients in, and training to really understand leadership skills.

You’ll know what to do before a session, during a session and after a session, and what a coaching strategy session will look like when you graduate Mentor Masterclass. You’ll come to deeply understand the exact questions to ask, conversation models to use, and how to follow up with clients post-session. We’ll also dive into leadership skills, debate techniques, leadership, managerial skills, as well as emotional leadership for yourself, your clients, and your business.

(I explain this all at the 32:56 point in the episode.)

The training you need to become a successful life coach must teach you all of this and also must walk you through how to prospect for clients, what to do during a prospecting session, the order of prospecting, and following up. You’ll master what to say, how to build rapport with clients, pricing, defining your niche, and coaching skills for inside your session in Mentor Masterclass.

As you can see, there’s a lot to learn — there are actually many more essential skills that I cover in Mentor Masterclass! With all of these techniques you’ll need to master, I can anticipate your next question…

How long does it take to become a life coach?

How long it takes to become a life coach is dependent on the type of training you receive and how much time you have to invest in your training and building your business.  I run a one-year coach training program because I believe it takes about a year to get your coaching session skills and your business skills ready to be grounded in a solid business that is profitable.  However, you will be ready after the first month to start coaching and building your business. It doesn’t take a full year to get started and you can even make money your first month in training, if you choose the right life coach training program.

The reason I enroll my clients who aspire to become a coach in a year long program is because I don’t want to leave my clients on their own to discover how to start making money as a life coach. Additionally, there is a lot to figure out, business wise and experience wise once you get into the nitty gritty of coaching clients and building your business.  So I make sure I train them well on coaching and business skills and that I’m there by there side for the entire first year of building their business to walk them through each challenge and accomplishment.

Choosing The Right Life Coach Training Is What Will Determine How Long It Takes To Become A Life Coach

I’m not about putting you in a crowded space like some other coach training programs where you’re doing it all on your own. This is why soo many aspiring coaches take years to get paying clients, they are stuck in programs that don’t teach them how to launch and offer no personal support and mentorship.  My students in Mentor Masterclass feel supported and can confidently make money in the first few months of becoming a coach as a result of this intimacy and the way the training is set up.

Your Unique Set of Life Circumstance Play a Big Role In How Long it Take To Become A Life Coach

As far as your personal timetable goes and how long it will take you to become a life coach, a lot will depend on your availability. Let’s say you’re a new mom, or you’re working a nine-to-five job and have limited hours. Or maybe you’re unemployed and fully available all day long to dig into your coach training and launching yourself into a career as a life coach. Obviously, if you have the space to study and create for 4-6 hours a day you are going to build your confidence and skills much quicker.

Maybe you have more of a confident personality and are already excited about putting yourself out there and calling yourself a coach. Or maybe you’re a perfectionist and you won’t put yourself out there until you feel like you have all the pieces together.  Women who are willing to take a risk and coach, while they are learning, are going to start their business much faster.

These huge differences in my students are why I start Mentor Masterclass with a deep self-discovery process — and why I offer my Mentor Masterclass Self-Discovery week for free, for women who want to discover whether coaching is right for them and how long it will take YOU to become a life coach.

(I talk more about this at the 37:00 point in the episode.)

How Long Did it Take Me To Become A Life Coach With Paying Clients

As for my own timetable and how long it took me to become a life coach:

  • I enrolled in a 30 day free training which helped me find the right coaching program for me.

  • I had paying clients my first week into my coach training program (a 6-month coach certification program).  I was unemployed at the time and ready to go ALL-IN.

  • I was making six figures within the first 14 months of becoming a coach

  • I hit my first $100,000/year of revenue and created my signature program in year one of becoming a coach

  • I went to four conferences within the first six months of starting training to diversify my skills as a coach.

  • I joined a mastermind and went on three retreats in the first year of learning how to become a life coach.

  • I had no online business skills, no email list, no marketing experience (other than in the acting industry), no writing training and learned all of these things by trial and error within my first year.

After years of running my life coach training program, I’ve found it takes about six months of solid training to really get the skills, techniques and learn the art of coaching. On average it takes another six months to really learn what it takes to run a successful coaching business.

The most important thing you can focus on to become a life coach quickly, is taking care of yourself by investing in yourself.  There is very little start up cost to starting a coaching business since you do not need an office, many supplies, or employees.  You do however need solid training and experience having a coach. If you want to be able to sell coaching, you need to believe in investing in a coach for yourself first.  This will really allow you to become a coach in way less time.

But that doesn’t mean that you’re waiting to make money until the end of your first year in training. You could make money very early on while building your business and growing your business, if you choose the right life coach training program that is setting you up to get started making money as a coach your first week in training. Most of my students have paying clients by three months into the program. Most of my students are making $25,000 to $100,000 by the end of the year long training.

Now that we’ve answered the question, “How long does it take to become a life coach,” do you want to keep going and discover how much money you can actually make as a coach?

How Much Do Life Coaches Make?

Coaching is the second-fastest growing industry (next to information technology) in America right now. The International Coach Federation did a worldwide study back in 2012, and they discovered that coaching was a $2 billion industry. And the industry has been growing rapidly ever since!

This means on a day-to-day basis, most personal coaches are charging between $100 and $300 an hour. Specialized coaches usually charge $500 an hour or more, and sometimes it’s into the thousands depending on the specialty and their client success record.

Most coaches take on an average of 10-20 clients per month, who enroll in coaching packages.  An average coaching package offers a discount for committing to 2-4 sessions per month. The math turns out to be on average $400-$2,000 per month, per coaching client.

Ever since my coaching practice was featured on the front page of The New York Times, I’ve been teaching new and established coaches the exact same process that I used to quickly become a coach and a feminine leader — and to get paying clients within my first week of business.

All of that, plus a waiting list all within 14 months of becoming a coach, and I became known as “the coaches’ coach.” It’s the reason I created my full-length signature program, Mentor Masterclass. And like I mentioned, I’ll take you through a full week of self-discovery, for free, to get to know you and help you learn what method of making money as a life coach and how much money you have the potential of making as a coach.

For one week you’ll get to try out what it would be like to be a coach, and decide whether this career is right for you.

When I have a one-on-one client, I currently charge $550 for an hour-long session. I also run a group coaching program that runs from $8,000 to $10,000 for each student, with 46 students enrolling each year.  I also run retreats that are $3,000 for the weekend for each woman and range from 21-31 women attending. I run workshops, and an evergreen program that I only make once, then sell again and again while I sleep. The International Coach Federation found that most coaches offer at least one other product or service along with their one-on-one sessions.  This is how coaches make $100,000 or more per year as a coach.

You’re still getting in early on the coaching industry’s rising tide if you’re looking into this now. For example, more and more individuals and businesses are starting to see the value of coaching and how it can transform people’s lives, both personally and professionally.

Some more fun facts: 76% of coaches expect to see growing revenues and a growing client base over the coming years, and most coaches feel really positive about their decision to become a coach because they expect to see their businesses keep growing into the future.

As coaching becomes an even more widely recognized industry, a more solid industry, especially if you have great training, then that sounds like job security to me. I appreciate an industry that has a high demand, multiple streams of revenue — and I love knowing that as coaches we don’t have to fit ourselves into another role or into someone else’s schedule.

How to create a life coaching brand to make more money as a coach.

There’s something unique about you that someone is looking for. And that unique gift paired with high-level coach training is going to create a ripple effect that will change how we live and act in our world.  You are your brand. Know yourself, your gifts and talents and you will begin to understand what makes you unique as a coach.

Most women who enroll in my signature coach training program, are not just here to make $100,000 a year. They’re drawn to coaching because they know they want to make great money and that coaching can provide the financial security and freedom they’re seeking. More importantly they want to create a lifestyle they love and to experience true FREEDOM.  They get to choose who they work with, what they work on while they’re being of service in a very soulful way and doing meaningful work driven by heart and intuition.

The power of feminine sovereignty and how it relates to making great money as a life coach

Inside my program Mentor Masterclass, I call being the sovereign queen of your life feminine sovereignty. It’s not a term that everyone is familiar with, but it means getting to the point in your life where you feel really deeply connected to your own trust in yourself and your ability to make decisions and lead. You feel connected to your brilliance, and to your softness and to your wholeness as a woman all at the same time.

You can think of it like an embodied archetype, this sovereign queen where you live your life and make your choices from this place of feeling strong but vulnerable, a place of feeling clear and decisive, but also flexible and open to divine inspiration and guidance.

For the women I work with, these three things are what coaching is really about:

  • Financial success

  • Personal sovereignty

  • Making a difference in your clients’ lives

I know this is a lot to think about. When you really start to tune into the essence of coaching on a deeper level like this, it can be really moving. So let’s just take a breath, settle in, and congratulate yourself for finally taking a moment to inquire into this and to finally get the answer to the first 4 questions you had in considering weather coaching was a smart career change for you. This can be a life-changing moment in your life — it was for me.

Now that we’re connected, you don’t have to figure everything out on your own and you don’t have to power through the next steps to becoming a life coach. You’re about to learn what all the women inside Mentor Masterclass have already discovered, if you are willing to take the next step.
