How to Choose the Best Life Coach Training Schools

July 30th, 2019 | no comments

Have you tried researching the best life coach training schools and gotten very overwhelmed?

If we haven’t met, I’m Jeannine Yoder, creator and founder of the most personal, high-touch and soulful life coach training and certification program for women, Mentor Masterclass.  My free Mentor Masterclass Self-Discovery Week, seven days of soulful practices to help you become a successful life coach, is one of the most popular free online coach training programs available to new and established coaches.

You’ve just found your way to part two of a 4-part podcast series, Become A Life Coach: Everything you Need to Know to Start and Grow a Successful Coaching Business + Clear Action Steps to Begin Today. The Best Life Coach Training Schools

What You Need To Be Asking In Order To Choose The Best Life Coach Training Schools

Some underlying questions I’ll address to answer how to choose the best life coach training school for you (in the podcast and right here) are:

  1. Do you need to be certified by your life coach training program?

  2. What qualifications do you need to gain from your training?

  3. How much do life coach training programs cost?

  4. What is the average salary of a life coach after they get training?

  5. How is life coaching training different from being a therapist?

  6. Why is Mentor Masterclass the best life coach training school for women?

I’ve been running my own life coach training school, Mentor Masterclass, since 2013, and many successful graduates are now making 50,000 to $150,000 a year serving as a life coach. I’ll tell you about Mentor Masterclass so you can feel into whether it might be the best life coach training school for you.

So let’s get started: How do you choose the best life coach training schools for you — which are the best programs to consider, and why?

Once upon a time, choosing the best life coach training school — and life coaching in general — was an esoteric, misunderstood career. Now, life coaching is firmly planted in the mainstream and there are many life coach training schools to choose from. You hear it talked about in the movies, you hear about friends and loved ones moving into this work, and more people are seeking out life coaches to help them work through life.

People seek coaching now to help them work through issues that come with career changes, financial freedom, health issues, relationships, balancing their personal lives with work, or feeling more confident in any area of life they’re trying to pursue. Their expectations are high and you to choose the best life coach training school in order to be up for the job!

Along the way, life coaching has grown into the second-fastest growing profession in America today. (You can listen in at the 03:08 point in the episode where I talk more about this and how I help women to become coaches through Mentor Masterclass.)

Highly qualified coaches can really have an impact on people’s lives and make a great income. So if you want to become a life coach, where do you get started and how do you choose the best life coach training program for you?

You have to begin by finding the best life coach training schools and getting certified. This brings me to my first question…

1. Do You Need to Be a Certified Life Coach Through Your Life Coach Training School?

It surprises many people to learn that there is no nationally recognized certification for coaching. This means there’s no law or requirement around accreditation for the coaching industry.

What does this mean for you? Your decision about the best life coach training school or program should not be based off of certification and instead should include an understanding of how it will fit into your lifestyle needs, the pace in which you desire to launch your coaching business, the personal business support you will receive and how confident you will be in your skills as a coach upon graduating.

This means when you become a coach and choose the best life coach training program, you can innovate your own strategies, make your business unique, focus on serving the kinds of clients you want, and run your business in a way that feels most aligned.

(I chat about how I teach women to do this in Mentor Masterclass at the 05:13 mark in the episode if you’d like to hear more.)

The downside? Some people don’t know what they’re doing and they give the coaching industry a bad name by not getting any life coach training at all.

You’ll have to take everything a life coach certifier says with a touch of humor, because the highly respected certifying organizations — even the big ones like the International Coaching Federation program — are literally just certifications that are based off a room of people agreeing with each other. They might be missing a wide range of master coaching techniques, important coaching strategies, and relevant business resources you’ll need to become a successful coach.

(To get a feel for what I’m talking about you can try learning these techniques for free in the 7 Day Self Discovery Week Free online coach training.)

To put it into perspective: Tony Robbins, Marie Forleo, Danielle Laporte, Gabby Bernstein, Kris Carr, and Marianne Williamson, all world-renowned coaches who are not certified through ICF.

When you’re doing your research, ICF may pop up often and position itself as the gold standard. But it’s just the same accreditation and certification as any other life coach training school that you’ll find that offers a certification — because there is no nationally recognized certification.

I offer a certification to my students in Mentor Masterclass AND it doesn’t matter, because certification is basically made up. What you really need to be asking is Will I be an expert coach and know how to run my own business by the time I graduate my life coach training program?

2. What Qualifications Do You Need to Become a Life Coach?

In my life coach training program, Mentor Masterclass, I go through 12 different themes that I believe are vital for you to master in order to have the qualifications you need to become a successful life coach. (You can hop over to the 10:30 point in the episode to hear me explain this.)

The Best Life Coach Training Schools Will Make Sure You Master These 12 Qualifications And More

These are the 12 themes we cover in Mentor Masterclass (and hundreds of women from around the world have used them to become successful coaches):

  1. Goal Setting & Health Coaching. Health challenges are different for each client. For some it may be nutrition, for some it may be exercise, and for others it may be specific physical illness. We focus on teaching people how to create new patterns of self care so they can feel healthy, clean, energized, organized, unstuck, and motivated. You’ll learn and work with 37 tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help your clients take new actions, get new results, and shift their beliefs about their choices, their bodies, and their health.

  2. Relationship Coaching. The longest relationship you’ll ever have is the relationship with yourself. Once you understand your own motivations, attitudes, struggles, and gifts in your relationship with yourself, you’ll master 75 new tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help your clients in different phases of romantic relationship.

  3. Inner and Outer Game Techniques. Managing our inner game means managing the thoughts and internal conversations we have with ourselves. You’ll learn and work with 61 tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help clients bring about life-changing results in their internal states and their external world.

  4. Massive Action. An effective action coach gets people to take the actions necessary to achieve the results they want. When you’re great at action coaching, it means you’re nearly guaranteed of being an effective coach because you help your clients actually do something different to change their lives for the better. Action coaching is based in accountability – starting with yourself first, and then for your clients. You’ll learn and work with 23 tools, techniques, and conversation models that help you get your clients out of their old patterns and excuses, and into new, effective actions that lead to new, positive results.

  5. Career Coaching & Coaching Entrepreneurs. You’ll learn how to coach clients who need help with professional challenges. From entrepreneurs and start-up business owners, to home-based business owners, to clients who are going through a career transition. Since one third of our entire adult lives will be spent at work, career coaching is an extremely important and in-demand specialty. You’ll learn and work with 51 tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help clients achieve their business goals, find solutions to struggles at work, and take the actions they need to find or create their dream job.

  6. Identity & Accountability Coaching. Our identity is shaped by the roles we play in different situations. These roles often mirror our beliefs about ourselves. The good news is that we have the power – in every single moment – to play different roles, leading to different outcomes, which help us shape new beliefs. (Sound familiar?) You’ll learn and work with 15 new tools, techniques, and conversation models that give you the power to help your clients get honest about their beliefs so they can change the roles they’re playing, and ultimately get different results in their lives.

  7. Create Your Own Coaching Model. The RSVP model is also an effective way to help your clients get the results they’re looking for. This month we go deeper into the background of this model, and how to apply it to your coaching practice in new ways. Since I created the RSVP model myself, I’ll also share the steps I used so you can follow them yourself if you feel called to create your own coaching method. You’ll learn and work with 16 tools, techniques, and conversation models that build on the RSVP process. That way, you’ll have the power to help your clients Restore their potential, Simplify their lives, Verify their beliefs, and step into their Power.

  8. Metaphor & Archetype Coaching. Great coaches find effective ways to help clients let go of old patterns and habits that are no longer in their best interest. One of the most effective ways of doing this is to offer clients new frames of reference and models to substitute for the troublesome ones. We get a little “woo woo.” You’ll learn about working with goddesses and how to coach from a “soul mission” approach. (It’s OK if you want to skip this part too! This is a safe space to do what’s right for you.) You’ll learn and work with 13 new tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to help your clients break free from their limiting patterns and create new patterns that fill them with hope, optimism, and excitement for the future.

  9. The Keys to Motivation. At a core level, much of our behavior is motivated by the avoidance of pain or the seeking of pleasure – or a combination of the two. Which means that as coaches we’re most effective when we have tools that help our clients uncover their true motivations. You’ll learn and work with 12 tools, techniques, and conversation models you can use to shine a light on what’s really driving your clients. Uncovering these deep motivations can be a powerful force that helps clients start making more conscious choices about their attitudes and behaviors, ultimately leading to better results in their lives.

  10. >Life Purpose. One of our deepest longings is to discover a purpose that brings meaning and fulfillment to our lives. There are three stages of life purpose, and this month you’ll learn what they are and how to coach clients along their unique path to finding and living their unique calling. You’ll learn and work with 15 tools, techniques, and conversation models that give you the power to help clients uncover their life purpose, craft a purpose statement they can use as daily guidance, and start to envision (and act on!) what it means to live their true calling.

  11. Time Management and Productivity. There is a secret to ALL fast results. There are also distinct ways to understand time and its relationship to productivity. These tools allow us to create time freedom, financial abundance, and results in our lives that we’re proud to celebrate. As coaches we can help our clients create these things for themselves too. You’ll learn and work with 22 time and productivity tools that empower you to make better use of your time and get more of the satisfying results and outcomes you desire. Mastering these tools means you’ll have another set of skills to share with clients as well.

  12. Power & Leadership Coaching. We all have access to the same sources of power in our lives, regardless of our individual circumstances. When we learn how to access these sources of power, we begin to live our lives with feminine authority. As coaches, once we understand and tap into these sources of power for ourselves, we’re able to help clients do the same. We’ll be embracing and working with 18 tools, techniques, and methods to help your clients re-shape their beliefs at the deepest levels so they can take new actions, leading to new results – living the fullest reflection of an empowered life.

As a woman, you have a period and a cycle. We bleed every month and go through different emotional cycles than men. We have different skills and strengths when compared to men — we also have different weaknesses and challenges, because our bodies are cyclical and related to the moon. When you’re looking for the best life coach training school for you, if you’re a woman, you want to make sure your life coach training program teaches a feminine business model.

In Mentor Masterclass, I incorporate this kind of feminine leadership into my program. It will become part of your marketing and the intuitive building of your business itself. You’ll learn how to best utilize your cycles and hormones to feel solid in your life and create success without burning out.

When women feel messy, when they feel emotional, when they’re out of whack, when they’re powering through or being too masculine, it’s hard to build an aligned, exciting business that feels good. After all, most of us are become life coaches because we want a career we love!  You want to choose a life coach training school that qualifies you to do business in a way that honors your energy and genius as a woman.

Additionally, learning from a diverse panel of mentors and being taught many successful business models is essential. It’s why I introduce you to a panel of successful women leaders/coaches who take you through the themes of walking your talk, stepping into the role of the coach, prospecting and marketing, and more. You’ll receive one mentor each month of the 12 months in the program, and you’ll learn how they built their unique successful six-figure coaching business models.

Hop over to the 28:50 point where I chat about this part of the program. You can also visit the Mentor Masterclass website to see the full panel of successful mentors.

3. How Much Does it Cost to Become a Life Coach? What Do The Best Life Coach Training Schools Charge for Tuition?

As you continue your research to find the best life coach training schools, you’ll notice there are some trainings that require you to take multiple trainings that add up to $25,000 or $30,000! I find that overly complicated.

The best life coach training schools are all-inclusive and teach you everything within the one commitment and one investment. These training schools are going to range from about $7,000 to $25,000.

Mentor Masterclass is one of the most successful life coach training programs for women — and it’s the most affordable and relatable. It’s a yearlong program under $10,000 (and we have payment plans available.)

And because you’re guaranteed to be making money as a coach through the program, you’ll pay off your tuition as you go through the program. That’s what you should look for in the best life coach training schools. (I discuss this more at the 30:55 point in the episode.)

4. What is the Average Salary of a Life Coach?

A 2012 study found that coaching is a $2 billion industry — and the coaching industry keeps on growing. The average fee for one hour with a life coach is $229, and specialized coaches easily charge $500 an hour or more (and that’s just for one-on-one coaching sessions, not group programs, retreats, etc).

When you master all those qualifications I mentioned above, you can become a specialized coach after your training and charge more money. The average fee for a one hour session with a specialized coach is $559, and that’s just for one-on-one coaching.

More amazing news: 76% of coaches expect to see growing revenues and a growing client base over the coming years. Coaches feel really positive about their decision to become a coach because they expect to see their businesses, and the average salary of a life coach, keep on growing into the future.

(If you haven’t yet, listen to the first podcast episode in this series, where I break down how I’ve gotten to a $500,000+ annual income as a life coach, exactly how much coaches make, how they set up their workdays, what they actually do, and more.)

If you go to one of the best life coach training schools that provide everything I’ve mentioned so far, you’re going to be making $25,000 to $125,000 in your first year as a coach.

5. The Best Life Coach Training Schools Will Teach You How Life Coaching Is Different From Therapy

When you’re coaching, you’re not a therapist, and the best life coach training schools will teach you how coaching is different from therapy.

Coaching tends to focus on the present and future, rather than the past. Coaches help people identify their goals and the obstacles they’re facing. Like therapy, coaching involves guidance and support — but also places a great deal of emphasis on accountability, enabling people to do more than they might on their own.  Coaching also allows you the freedom to create your own coaching model, based off your training.

This means you get to choose WHO you work with and how. You don’t have to take any client that wants to work with you. As a coach, you can build a brand around your unique interests, gifts, talents, training and interests. The best life coach training schools will help you determine what your zone of genius is, and in Mentor Masterclass you learn how to brand yourself and choose a niche market to help scale your business. You’ll fall in love with every client you work with.
