This is What’s Causing You to Feel Isolated and Lonely
I was anxiously weaving my silver Mustang in and out of traffic on my way to L.A. My audition song played on the speakers, while I processed what was about to happen with equal amounts of fear and excitement.
I’d been accepted to audition for a space at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City! I’d called in and taken the day off from my 9-5 job as an appraisal coordinator, and I knew I was going to be accepted if I auditioned.
And yet as I drove, part of me also considered getting off the freeway and turning around each time I passed an exit. Maybe I could just go back to my safe stable job — no one else even knew I was doing this.
When I’d applied, I made the decision that it was time to make my dreams a reality. The program itself cost $50,000 and I’d have to quit my job to move to New York City. I had no idea how I was going to pull off either of those things. I only knew that as I kept my foot on the gas pedal, I was taking the driver’s seat of my life and everything was now going to change.
I was accepted. I made it happen. I did it all completely blind and alone.
Seven years later, I took a similar leap into a new career as a life coach.
Only this time, being a lone warrior was not going to work.
Isolation and loneliness is a choice.
If you’re like me, something happened in your life to make you believe you should wear your independence like a badge of honor.
It’s great to be self-sufficient —it’s just not the way to the absolute top of success. To break through the upper limit and glass ceiling, you have to heal that wound and embrace support. True leadership requires collaboration.
It doesn’t make you weaker to receive support. Instead, it gives you potent access to limitless strength. Lone warriors don’t know what to do with this tool, and if you’re alone and stuck, it’s time for mastery-level training.
For many successful feminine leaders, it hit them all at once like a lightning bolt. For others, it unfolded gradually…
It was the moment they knew they were going to make their dreams into reality, no matter what.
They knew for a fact they were going to finally put ideas and plans into action. The passion they felt inside for their true calling was about to become their lucrative career.
Then they looked around and realized these ambitions made them very, very different from nearly everyone else around them.
Not only did no one share their same dream — many of their friends and family members didn’t even understand them, no matter how much they wanted to.
Does this resonate with you? You’re ready to pursue your life purpose and make a positive contribution to clients all over the world as a life coach — but you’re finding that it’s tough to accomplish when no one else in your life is on a similar path.
Most people in my life told me I was crazy for taking out a $50,000 loan to attend a 2-year musical theatre college. My husband (boyfriend at the time), thought studying to become a life coach was going to turn out to be like the multi-level marketing scams I’d fallen for in the past. Thirteen years later, I can say I’ve performed on some of Broadway’s most beautiful stages and I paid off my college loans with one check after my first coaching program launched.
I used to believe the only way I was going to be successful was to push myself and figure everything out alone. Nobody around me was striving for anything better. My family struggled with drug addiction and my girlfriends were all emotionally struggling, competitive and broke. I was a lone warrior.
Deep inside I was lonely, afraid and tired. I had such big dreams, and nothing in me was willing to lay down or give up. My passion for performing turned into a mission to change women’s lives and I found that my deeper and truer purpose was to become a life coach. I wanted to spend my time doing work I loved, that felt like it was an expression of my unique life purpose…
Only this time I vowed not to do it all alone. I learned that the isolation and loneliness I felt was a mistaken belief that the resources and support you need are not available.
Fast-forward to 2019 and I’m happy and thankful to say I make half-a-million dollars a year doing work I love (and that I’m naturally gifted at). I can work from pretty much anywhere and I choose the clients I work with. I take time off to raise my daughter and have planned a spacious maternity leave to invite our new baby into the world. And I have a team of women that support me in my personal life and professional business.
A huge part of making this life happen for myself has been cultivating a loving, supportive sisterhood of women and mentors from all over the world.
I’ve seen firsthand that you can’t reach your highest levels of success and be recognized for what makes you unique if you believe you have to do it all alone!
High-touch support from a mentor and sisterhood — especially during your first year of changing careers to pursue entrepreneurship — is the key to sustainable success, time, location and financial freedom.
