How Any Life Coach Can Cure Stage Fright Before A Big Speech

August 17th, 2016 | 5 comments

Did you know everybody gets nervous before they take the stage? It’s true! Even the speakers that you find most composed, captivating, expressive and seemingly perfect with words when they take the stage.

I get nervous and I’ve been performing for large live audiences since I was 8 years old. In the theatre world we’ve decided if you don’t get nervous, your passion is dead and you really should stop performing altogether.

It happens every year during preparations for The Captivate Performance.

My excuse is that I’m simultaneously preparing for a big and vulnerable performance that includes practicing a song and writing a speech as well as playing stage manager and creative coach for all the celebrity coaches and thought-leading speakers who will be performing alongside me.

On top of all that, the performance kicks off with me leading a weekend retreat to support 30 of my current clients in taking the stage. It’s the first time I meet women in person who I’ve been working with virtually all year long.

Meanwhile, I’m still running my life coach training program, Mentor Masterclass and the Sisterhood Mastermind, all while leading my team!

As much as I love it, it can feel like a lot.

There is one sweet activity that keeps me sane, fearless, productive and stress-free during this time: DANCE.

Dance has always been my ticket to a supportive inner voice and a graceful flow of love and focus throughout my body, no matter what’s going on in my life or my business.

Dance is the best way to be IN your body, out of your head, and releasing stress.

Because this performance requires all of us as speakers and artists to move out of our heads and away from the idea that we have to be perfect to take the stage, I knew that dance had to be a part of the event.

I hired Brian and his brother Paul, the founders of Double Up Dance Studio here in CT to choreograph a fierce number for us to perform during The Captivate Performance, and we’ve been working on it leading up to the event!

Today I’m excited to show you a behind-the-scenes peek at our dance and rehearsal! Keep in mind this is just my friend Heather Pierce (one of the Captivate speakers) and me in our very first rehearsal, so there was much cleaning up to do. But I’d still love for you to PRESS PLAY on the video below!

Heather actually lives a few blocks away from me here in CT. She’s become one of my closest friends and we do everything from working out, to co-working on our businesses side-by-side, to date nights with our partners together.

Last year we hired a choreographer from NYC to choreograph the dance to Captivate for us.

We had such a good time working on choreography in a group with awesome music, we found ourselves sad there were no real dance classes we loved nearby.

We asked a few friends around town if they knew of any dance classes that weren’t just for teens. Studios that played great music and featured real choreography we get could down, dirty and sweaty with. And what do you know? Double Up Dance Studio was just a block from our house!

Brian and Paul from Double up Dance Studio in Fairfield really bring the heart of community and their ability to empower women to “live your life” (something they always say over the music while teaching us sexy but easy-to-remember dance choreography).

DUDS provides high-quality instruction in an atmosphere that’s never intimidating. They create a welcoming environment for “movers” of all levels.

They’re known for their contagious energy, creative persistence in teaching, and unconditional faith in their students’ ability to improve.

And if you live in Fairfield or nearby I highly recommend checking out Double Up Dance Studio and letting them know we sent you! It will become your favorite workout class and home away from home.

It’s everything our hearts could desire! And I’m so excited that the founders are playing such a big role in Captivate this year.

At the end of our performance, when all of the speakers come together in their own essence in a synchronized dance, we remember that we really are all one. That we are on a shared mission.

We recognize that we’re not alone and we got this. And it gets us out of our heads and into the heart of fierce fun, something everybody involved with the event needs.

I’d love for you share in the excitement. If you haven’t bought your ticket for Captivate yet, now is the time!

You’re not going to want to miss seeing the final version of the dance and being with us in person. Click here to learn all the details about this event of the year!

(BTW, Have you checked out the amazing lineup of speakers yet? It’s full of celebrity coaches and thought leaders in our industry. Come check it out and buy your ticket before they sell out (click the image below)).

I hope to see you there, love!
