How do I attract the right clients?

October 25th, 2016 | 13 comments

It’s another Wake Up Wednesday Q&A episode, where one of our sisters comes to jam with me about a question that’s been on her mind about her life coaching business.

They’re always insightful and helpful—today’s is no exception. It’s part of the foundation for anyone’s successful business:

“How do I attract the right clients?”

It’s great to start thinking about the clients you’d like to attract before you even start your business. And it’s also never too late to begin.

Back when I first started coaching, I was so eager to coach. I coached any and everybody!

No joke:

  • I would look around the subway on my way to Pilates class for anyone who looked like they needed support, start a conversation and offer them a discovery session.

  • I pitched the owner of my Pilates studio with an idea for a free workshop I could lead on a Wednesday night.

  • I left free session cards at the Juice Generation on 72nd street and Broadway near my apartment in New York.

  • I coached my dad and my best friend.

Within two months of starting my coaching business I had 15 paying clients and was making my goal income (which was $4,000 a month at the time).

I was also burnt out and having dizzy spells.

I had no understanding of how to protect my energy and nurture myself while holding deep space and intention for 15 people (all with different challenges) on a weekly basis.

The worst part was, while I was making good money, I was not in love with the people I was coaching.

I lowered my rates to accommodate their fear of investing in themselves, which is the reason I had to have 15 consistent clients to make my monthly financial goal, and most of my clients played the victim throughout our sessions. Which really drove me NUTS!

How do I attract the right clients?

I wanted to serve clients who were excited to invest in themselves and committed to taking action.

In today’s episode I share what I wish I had known before I started coaching professionally.

What you’re really asking is: how do I enjoy my work? How can I share my gifts with the people I really want to work with?

I’m so glad Shauna Lay, a yoga teacher, life coach, and soon-to-be Mentor Masterclass graduate, stopped by to discuss this topic with me. She believes that acceptance of everything is the key to happiness. Acceptance of beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and most importantly, our bodies. Everything she creates stems from this message: retreats, one-on-one coaching, and programs to help women find their true happiness.

In today’s video, I’ll explain:
  • How to give yourself permission right now if you want to call in your ideal clients. (I dive into this at the 4:20 point in the video)

  • The two steps for setting your intention around deciding exactly who you want to work with. This is huge! (4:47)

  • What to do if you find yourself wanting to play small. (8:37)

  • Why it’s so important to share your vision for your business with someone in your life. (9:41)

  • How to find the clients you really want, and meet them where they are. (12:27)

After you watch today’s episode, I’d love to hear from you: who are your ideal clients, and why do you love serving them (or desire to serve them)?

We all want to hold you accountable for the vision of your business! You deserve it, sister – believe it.

All my love,

Jey

  1. thank you so much Shauna for this question and thank you so much Jeannine I had this question also a long time in my mind. I will scream it out loud

  2. What a hoot! I loved being in conversation with you around finding my ideal clients. I am so happy to have this video to review over and over even though I was totally judging myself. Love you and this!!!

  3. Fantastic question Shauna, thank you for asking! And thank you Jey for your amazing reply!!! As I was listening and you mentioned the “Am I worthy of serving this client?” and what is coming up when you ask that I realise I had a question “What if I don’t have enough time, space and energy to serve the clients that come to me?” Just this past week or so I realised I wanted to shift from a money belief I have that “I always have just enough” to “I have more than enough” and have started to say this before I do anything – e.g. “I have more than enough money to buy this”, “I have more than enough time to make dinner”, “I have more than enough energy to complete this work” and I realise that is the answer to my question. “I will have more than enough time, energy and space for the people I call in.” I trust that I am supported and have more than enough to give. I look forward to see what else comes up as I meditate and journal around this!

    • Helen it’s a really important question. I believe time is simply thought and emotion and when those are clear, aligned and embodied we feel differently about time. Creating space to journal and get clear about creating the space is very important. Let me know if you desire any specific support!
