How to Help Your Clients Reach Their Goals and Feel Empowered!

June 10th, 2015 | 1 comment

In this episode of Wake Up Wednesday, I’m gonna get really real with y’all. Ready?

There’s a truth and lesson I’m teaching myself over and over:

Achievement isn’t always about attaining huge goals. It can be as simple as slightly changing your approach to life.

Why is this so important? Because if you or your coaching client are traveling into unknown territory in attempt to achieve a new goal, you’re going to need time to think and enjoy the present moment in a relaxed way (even as you’re taking massive action.)

Knowing where your emotions, fears and focuses are stemming from is incredibly helpful in staying clear and confident. And, there’s a handy NLP technique to help you (and your clients) do exactly that.

If you can teach your client to play detective and note where they are in their journey, you can help them recognize their progress, trust the process, and move toward their dreams more quickly. Dive in and watch today’s episode to learn this technique!

When you accompany your clients on their coaching journey, they naturally move through four steps of learning. NLP identifies these steps by the following phases.

Phase 1: Unconsciously Incompetent

Clients don’t know what they don’t know. At this point, they are operating in the dark.

In this phase, you should be encouraging them to reduce those blind spots by doing research around their goal, and start examining areas they don’t know anything about yet.

Phase 2: Consciously Incompetent

After clients start paying attention, they realize how much they don’t know about themselves, or the things they need to do to achieve their goal.

Clients in this space can often feel vulnerable, and it’s your job as a coach to positively reinforce and encourage your client’s strengths and commitment to learning. This is a tough phase to go through, so they’ll need to you to be their cheerleader more than ever!

Phase 3: Consciously Competent

Clients now know what they’re doing right, and what they’re doing wrong.

However, they’re probably still referring to notes and checklists to figure things out or take the next steps. This is because the actions they’re taking aren’t habits and don’t feel completely natural yet.

As a coach, you’ll be supporting this client to keep practicing until they reach the final stage.

Phase 4: Unconsciously Competent

By the final phase, your client’s behavior is second nature, without consciously thinking about it. Everything feels easy and fluid, and your client has incorporated this goal or achievement into her lifestyle, beautifully.

If you reach the fourth phase, it means your client’s feeling totally empowered, and you’ve done your job, coach!

Similarly, your personal journey as a coach naturally shifts through these stages as well.

After you notice you’re unconsciously competent in some areas, you open the door to discover a whole new area where you have so much to learn – like the joy of coaching, for example.

As your skills increase, you’ll become a model of excellence for newcomers, and you can continue to look for new models from whom you can learn.

Now, lady friend, the mic is in YOUR hand.

It’s time to connect with your sisters! Share with us:
